Letter from the president of the Museum of Hunting and Nature in Paris:

As the head of the musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris, I strive to meet the expectations of the visitors by answering their questions about the collection. These questions are about the objects and artwork as well as the legitimacy of hunting. As you know, the urbanization of modern society and its growing distance from its rural roots does not foster this type of activity or knowledge. A lack of understanding grows and tends to depreciate the testimonies – whether they are artistic, technical, naturalistic or ethnologic – of this practice – which nevertheless has existed since the origin of humanity. “Exhibiting Hunting” is now a challenge you are probably facing as the person in charge of a hunting collection.

This is why we would be interested in sharing our experiences. We would like to propose having an international meeting between hunting collections managers. This meeting could enable useful discussions on a number of practical matters such as: intended audience, pedagogical means, communication strategies, etc.. This could also lead to common actions for example in the field of communication.

I am considering hosting a meeting in Paris in the musée de la Chasse et de la Nature at the end of next year. This conference will be set up in connection with the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC), which created the first international census of museums and private houses open to the public and dedicated to hunting.

Would you please let me know if you wish to be informed about this meeting and if you plan to participate?

For this purpose, I would be very grateful if you could fill out the enclosed survey. It will enable us to update the catalogue of hunting collections created by the CIC.

I hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you at the musée de la Chasse et de la Nature.

Best regards,

Claude Anthenaise

Director of the Museum of Nature and Hunting
